First trip to the Comedy Studio!
You always hear many things about the Comedy Studio so I knew this is where I needed to be aiming if I wanted to truly become part of Boston’s comedy scene. I guess I’m kinda lying it wasn’t really my first trip, but the first time here, I never made it up to the room and was barely able to walk after the Rosebud for my first time doing stand up. Drink much? So I had been thinkin about tryin to head over one night and get my package which I’d heard you needed to do. I looked at the upcoming schedule and saw that on Sunday, 10/9/11, Thom Crowley would be doing his act there for his first time at the Studio! Bingo, it was settled, what better time to go check out the Studio then when I could be there to support one of the guys I’d been doing mic’s with since I’d started. And the icing on the cake, Mike Abramson was gunna be doing a set too! Ok settled, its time for Tommy Sunshine to hit up the Comedy Studio!
What to say about the whole experience? For me, it was like something out of a play. I took the ‘T’ in, Red line to Harvard Square. Didn’t know where to go when I got off and my damn phone wasn’t picking up gps there in the middle of Cambridge. I took a guess started walking and saw the Mass Ave sign so knew I made the right guess. Things were going good already!
So, I walked into the room when it opened up, said Hi to Rick Jenkins, the owner/manager/host, who was very cordial, had some brief small talk, and he gave me the magical ‘package.’ I dare not speak as to the contents of said ‘package’, thats like top secret comic shit ok, sorry, I just can’t do it! NEVAH!!! DO WHAT U WILL TO MY WIFE, I WILL NEVAH DIVULGE THE SECRETS OF THE PACKAGE!!!!
But anyways, I sat in a dark and creepy corner very suited to my fat, old, creepy self, looked over the material and drank some Shock Top for 3.50 a pop! The studio is a nice comfortable room, seats bout 80 I guess and was filled to the brim! Rick hosted the show which started right after 8 and we were off!
All the comics did well with only one, uh, odd guy. There were a couple old hats which did amazing like Mehran Khagani whom I met for the first time tonight. Dude is the most fun, has this overwhelming bubbly gay guy personality, loved ‘em! Tom Morello is a Boston comic who is living in San Antonio these days. I’d never seen him, I’d heard of him but dude certainly knows how to work the room over and then some. Oh yeah! Rick Canavan killed tonight as well! I had seen Rick ’bout a month ago at the Surf Lounge show, but while I had appreciated his material at the time, I thought he seemed a bit detached on that evening. Not tonight though, he ripped some shit up and had an amazing set! I had the good fortune to talk with Rick a little after the show and what a great guy he is, don’t believe all that message board hype
. Not all of it anyways lol!
My boys, Thom Crowley and @MikeAbramson1 both killed! Its was really fun watching Thom doing his first stand up at the Comedy Studio being so familiar with his material. Just waiting for the hits to come in and boy did they come in. The crowd absolutely loved him and all the jokes I knew would kill, welp, they killed! Amazing job Thom, you really are a talented writer and performer. It was a pleasure seeing you destroy tonight! Grats man!
After all was said and done, I stayed and helped break the place down, figured it was the least I could do for getting to see such a great night at the comic rate. This was nice because it gave me a chance to socialize a lil bit with the comics and just give a little back. Felt like I was part of something bigger than my normal open mic routine, if just to watch and help out after. Folks, if ya been holding off on spending some time at the studio, get yo butt out there! You’ll enjoy yourself and help your progression as a comic if only by watching how its done!
